Watercolor is a medium to be explored – not mastered.
Once I recognized that, good art followed. Freed from the quest to find The One Right Way to Do Watercolor, I discovered a new respect for this medium that is ever-changing, not wholly tameable, and loaded with possibilities.
Certainly some basics are needed: an understanding of the water:paint ratio, an ability to lay a wash, a knowledge of pigment properties, and an understanding of how to mix colors. But even those basics are not fixed skills; they are fluid -- dependent on humidity levels, paper choices, and any other number of changing factors. Watercolor is full of surprises, and that is what fascinates me.
My exploration has led me to my current practice of painting with triads. I choose a specific red, yellow, and blue based on my subject matter, the atmosphere I want to convey, and the pigments’ ability to “play well together.”
Where once I worried about whether tube or pan paint was best, I now try it all: watercolor pencils, watercolor crayon, watercolor crystals, gouache, and ink. I will paint on paper, illustration board or canvas. I might paint a still life that is about the texture of the objects or a landscape that is about the shapes. I enjoy painting from old family albums and abstract wire drawings of landmarks.
I also view myself as a “guide” for other people’s watercolor journeys. I have found great satisfaction in sharing what I do know with people who are also “on a watercolor path.” I have paired my secondary and higher education teaching experience with my artistic passion by instructing beginners’ and improvers’ watercolor classes in my studio and for Ivy Tech’s Center for Lifelong Learning.
